      What to do after a Tableau Export?

      1. Axis-Based Charts

      Applicable to: Line Charts, Area Charts, Bar Charts, Column Charts, Lollipop Charts.

      • Replace the mock dimension fields in the Rows and Columns shelves with the corresponding fields from the actual dataset.
      • For measure fields, review which mock measure values are being used in the chart. Replace those with the correct actual measure fields, or drag and drop the necessary measure field directly onto the Measure Names field.
      • Remove any extra or unnecessary fields from the Rows or Columns shelves to keep the visualization clean.
      • For axis titles, if the field is continuous, the title will appear as part of the built-in axis label. If the field is non-continuous, the title will appear as a separate text box. You can remove this text box when it’s not needed and rely on the built-in axis labels within the visualization sheet instead.

      2. Combo Charts

      • Replace the mock dimension field and the mock measure bar field directly with the actual fields.
      • For the line field:
        • Identify which mock dataset column is powering the line
        • Replace it with the appropriate column from the actual dataset
      • For axis titles, if the field is continuous, the title will appear as part of the built-in axis label. If the field is non-continuous, the title will appear as a separate text box. You can remove this text box when it’s not needed and rely on the built-in axis labels within the visualization sheet instead.

      3. Histograms

      • Create the required bins from the actual dataset field.
      • Replace the reference to the mock bin field with the actual one.
      • Update the associated mock measure field used in Rows/Columns to actual measure fields.

      4. Donut and Pie Charts

      • Replace the mock fields present in the Marks card.
      • Check which mock field is used for Color and which mock measure is used for Angle, then replace them with the corresponding actual fields.
      • If a calculated field is used as a measure:
        • Create the calculated field using actual data.
        • Replace the mock measure with this new field created from actual data.

      5. Scatter Plot, Bubble Charts, And Quadrant Chart

      • Replace the mock fields used in the axis directly with actual fields.
      • Review the mock fields used in Detail in the marks card and replace them with the correct fields from the actual dataset.
      • For Bubble Charts:
        • Identify the mock field controlling Size in the marks card and replace it with the appropriate actual field.
      • For Quadrant Charts:
        • Right-click on each axis and add a reference line as per your analytical requirement.
        • To create annotations, right-click on the sheet, select Annotate → Area, and resize the annotation box as needed.
        • (Note: Annotations in Tableau are static and do not update dynamically.)
      • For axis titles, if the field is continuous, the title will appear as part of the built-in axis label. If the field is non-continuous, the title will appear as a separate text box. You can remove this text box when it’s not needed and rely on the built-in axis labels within the visualization sheet instead.

      6. Treemap

      • Replace the mock fields present in the Marks card.
      • Confirm which mock dimension and mock measure fields are in use and replace them with actual fields.
      • Specifically, replace the mock field that determines box size with the corresponding actual field.

      7. Heatmap

      • Replace the mock fields used in the axis directly with actual fields.
      • Update the mock measure field used for Color with the appropriate actual field.

      8. Waterfall Chart

      • Replace the mock fields used in the axis directly with actual fields.
      • In the Marks card, check the calculation called “WaterfallCalc” and confirm the correct measure field is being used.
      • For axis titles, if the field is continuous, the title will appear as part of the built-in axis label. If the field is non-continuous, the title will appear as a separate text box. You can remove this text box when it’s not needed and rely on the built-in axis labels within the visualization sheet instead.

      9. Funnel Chart

      • In Tableau, the Funnel Chart will be exported as a dual-axis bar chart rather than an area chart.
      • Replace the mock dimension field directly with the actual data.
      • For calculated fields used to build the funnel:
        • Open each calculation and replace the mock measure field with the actual one using Replace Reference.
        • Dimension values are hardcoded into each calculated field; confirm these match your data.
      • If duplicate calculation fields exist for a single data point, remove them. One calculation per data point is sufficient.

      10. Geomap

      • Replace the mock geographic field and mock measure field in the Marks card with the corresponding fields from the actual dataset.

      11. Sankey Chart

      • Sankey charts typically use Tableau’s built-in extension.
      • Replace the mock measure fields and mock Sankey level fields directly with actual data.
      • If the Sankey fails to render after replacing the data source:
        • Remove all actual fields from the Marks card.
        • Re-add them using the actual dataset.

      12. KPI Cards

      • Create calculated fields that reflect actual business logic (e.g., Total Sales, Percentage Growth) using the actual dataset.
      • Replace the mock placeholder KPI columns with these newly created calculated fields

      13. Simple Table

      • In a Simple Table (when no stylize columns is applied), all fields are exported as dimensions.
        • Replace the mock dimension fields in the Rows with the actual dimension fields.
        • Replace the mock dimension field used for measures in the Rows with actual measure field, convert them to Continuous, and drag them into the Text box with desired aggregation.
        • If more than one measure field is used in the Columns, after dropping the first measure into the Text box, drag and drop the second measure onto the existing measure column in the sheet.
        • If a calculated field is used as a measure column, first create the calculated field based on actual business logic (e.g., Total Sales, Percentage Growth) using the actual dataset, then replace the mock field with it.
      • When the Horizontal Bar Style is applied, the column with the bar visualization will appear at the rightmost end in the exported view.
        • Replace the mock dimension fields in the Rows with the corresponding actual dimension fields.
        • Replace the mock measure fields in the Rows with the actual measure fields, and adjust the aggregation type (e.g., SUM, AVG, COUNT) as required.
        • Replace the mock dimension field used as a measure in the Rows with the corresponding actual measure field. Convert it to Continuous, and drag it into the Text box in the Marks card of “Aggregated Measure Name” with desired aggregation.
      • If any other Stylized Column format is applied, the table will be exported as a Simple Table.

      14. Gauge Chart

      • The Gauge chart will not have the pointer in the tableau exported version.
      • If a calculated field is used as a measure column, first create the calculated field based on actual business logic (e.g., Total Sales, Percentage Growth) using the actual dataset, then replace the mock field with it.
      • Replace reference for the mock calculated filed named “ Gauge Chart Value 1” with the calculated filed created from the actual dataset (If multiple gauge charts are present, the mock field names may appear as “Gauge Chart Value 2”, “Gauge Chart Value 3”, and so on.)
      • In the marks card on the “Gauge chart text field” drag and drop the measure from the actual data over the sum field present in the marks card to display your desired value.

      15. Double Donut Chart

      • In Tableau, the Double Donut Chart is created using the Marks Layering method.
      • Replace the mock inner ring field (typically named “DoubleDonut_Inner_Ring + Chart Name”) with the corresponding field from the actual dataset.
      • Similarly, replace the mock outer ring field  (typically named “DoubleDonut_Outer_Ring + Chart Name”) with the appropriate field from the actual dataset.
      • Identify which mock measure is used for Angle, and replace it with the corresponding measure from the actual dataset.
      • If a calculated field is used as a measure:
        • Create the calculated field using the actual dataset.
        • Replace the mock measure with this newly created calculated field.

      16. Semantic/Convo Layer

      Mokkup has introduced a new feature called the Semantic/Convo Layer: 

      • The exported file comes pre-configured with all required metrics, measures, formulas and the uploaded dataset.
      • Users can connect their actual data source (with the same structure as the uploaded dataset) to the exported file and replace the existing dataset as needed.
      • Eliminates the need to manually create calculated fields.
      • Reduces effort and minimizes the chances of errors.
      • Speeds up the overall dashboard development process.
      • Currently, the Semantic/Convo Layer feature is available for all charts except Bubble, Scatter, and Double Donut charts.

      Note: The exported file may sometimes appear blank. This is usually due to the date range not being properly aligned. Adjust the date range to display the visuals correctly. Verify column data types when opening the workbook. In some cases, Tableau may reassign a column's data type when the workbook is opened on your system — for instance, a number being read as a string, or a date as text. This is standard Tableau behavior and can occur due to differences in data source drivers, regional/locale settings, or how Tableau re-samples the data on your machine. If any chart isn't displaying as expected, simply check the data pane and confirm each field has the correct data type. To adjust it, right-click the field → Change Data Type → select the appropriate type (Number, Date, String, etc.). Once corrected, the chart will render as designed.

      17. Verify and Finalize Visuals

      • Check all visuals for errors (e.g., missing fields). If an error occurs, replace the field from the correct table. In many cases, it is faster to remove and re-add the field.
      • For advanced visuals (e.g., Sankey diagrams, Maps, Bubble Charts, Funnels), carefully validate field formatting and adjust parameters to ensure proper functionality with actual data.
      • After replacing the data source, the colors of the visuals may differ from those in the mokkup wireframe. Refer to the design section of the wireframe to obtain the correct color codes.

      18. Save and Publish

      • Once all validations are complete, save the final version as a .twbx file.
      • Publish the report to Tableau Cloud and share the dashboards with your team for collaboration and review.
